Re: Flag of the 8th Missouri Calvary, Confederate

Mike,

What is your source for their use of the Bowen pattern flag and the CS Second National? The first use of the Bowen flag was at Vicksburg when John Bowen's Division got them in late February, 1863. The reinforcing division of Carter Stevenson seems to have also been issued a variant of these flags with red fields (that for the 39th Georgia still survives). These flags are well-depicted in the period woodcut of the surrender where the CS troops are stacking their arms and flags.

Price revitalized the flag for his 1864 campaign.

I would love to know your sources so I can put them in the file for this unit.

Thanks,

greg Biggs
