That is good information. To add to what you have taught us, Mr. Elsworth was a New York fella who moved to Chicago and got involved with the local militia. Early in 1860 he came to Springfield to study law at the Lincoln Herndon law office. That led to him getting involved with the Lincoln campaign for President in 1860. He along with John Hay and John Nicolay came to Washington with Lincoln. After that he returned to New York as you say and raised a regiment for the New York Firefighters. Once again you are correct. They were a Zouave Regiment called the Fire fighters.
Mr. Lincoln was troubled by his death. He ordered that his body lay in state in the White House. His death led to many enlistments. One of the new New York Regiments was know as Elsworths Avengers.
