Just what is "tape" on a CW flag?

Time to show my lack of native intellect (again)!

Many Confederate CW flags -- especially ANV flags -- have "tape" borders.

For instance, the 2nd or 3rd bunting ANV flags have (just going on memory here) orange or white "tape" borders. (Don't correct my color scheme here; I'm just using these possibly incorrect examples to identify the "tape" I'm talking about!)

What is this "tape"?

Is it just a term for narrow strips of other-colored material, so that any narrow strip of cloth on a flag is "tape"?

Or is it adhesive-backed, woven material -- a cloth version of our modern plastic "tape"?

Just curious, as I've never seen this particular aspect of CW flags (esp. Confederate) addressed (though I'm sure someone will point out to me that there was a four-month long discussion of same on this board in some previous year!).

Thanks, Board! -- Jim Huffman, vexed-illogist
