If you look at the consistency of these reports they all say pretty much the same thing - and I think these are inaccurate descriptions of the recently issued ANV silk flags from late November, 1861 into early December, 1862.

I have a letter than Howie Madaus found from one of Magruder's officers to his army letting them know about the "pink flags" that were being carried from units of the then Army of the Potomac that were coming down the Peninsula to reinforce him.

This is probably where these descriptions are coming from - but as we all know, the stars are in the arms of the cross.
