WBTS casualty figures usually included wounded and "missing". That can really bump up the number. "Missing" ? As in captured, wounded and lost or left with the enemy, terrified and running as if to desert, but to show back up for action? "Missing" was a broad term especially considering that official rolls were only recorded at pay time. So you could have been present every day but missed pay call and would be shown as absent. For two months. Or you could have "run off" to get the top field cleared and plowed and showed back up in time for pay and you would have been present for the period.
Gordon Rhea's book "The Wilderness" begins with Lee's Army of Northern Virginia camped on the south bank of the Rapidan River. Pretty much within hollerin' distance of Meade's/Grant's army on the north side. Southern soldiers spotted major movement with the enemy and orders were issued to break camp and begin their own move. The Overland Campaign was getting ready to kick off. Rhea stated that Lee's effective combatants numbered near 57,000 or there about (I don't have the book in my hand). While Meade's/Grant's traveling beef cattle heard numbered over 60,000. Hard to believe the odds. More cows moving with the enemy than Lee had rifles. But success came at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. Tenacity and "nowhere to go" but victory or death out weighs numbers every time. Ask the the Mujah Hadin in Afghanistan when they faced the Soviet army.
