There was a fairly good article in the Florida Historical Quarterly some years back that presented the hypothesis that Florida's secession from the Union was not supported by the majority of the state's citizens.
Based on my research in Northwest Florida, this was definitely the case. A number of Unionists in Marianna remained outspoken about their opinions throughout the war, even though they took up arms to defend the community during the Battle of Marianna.
Most families in the state sent soldiers to fight for the South (whether as volunteers or conscripts), but there was a lot of attachment to the old flag.
