Re: Fla. Maynard carbines
Exactly the kind of information requested in my previous post! The Maynard carbine seems an unlikely arm for infantry purposes (twenty-inch barrel with no bayonet attachment). Let's assume that enlisted men did receive these firearms. Perhaps members of the 1st Florida Regiment turned over their Maynards at the end of their twelve-month term. At that time (April-May 1862) they could have been reissued to mounted companies being recruited in west Florida counties.
Civil War Magazine (April 1986) includes an article titled, "Maynard - Massachusetts-made Carbines become the favorite of Rebels".
The Osprey publication, Confederate Army 1861-65: Florida, Alabama & Georgia by Ron Field and Richard Hook, appears to contain useful information on this topic.
