Asher's co. (Murray co. Cav.)

Hello,

I'm rather new to researching Civil War info and I could use some help.

My g-g-grandfather Samuel Anderson James fought for the Confederacy per family stories. As did his father-in-law Richard Hill Mobley - again per family stories.

I need some ideas on where to look for info on these people. Matters are complicated because both tended to go by initials rather than full names.

Somewhere I came across a S. A. James as a private in Asher's co. Murray co. Cav. I'm not in a position to order his records without being pretty sure he is my ancestor. So is there some way I can find out more through public info?

Thanks,

Lisa Taylor
