Confederate forces in North Carolina under the direct command of General Joseph E. Johnston, as well as the department(s) covering North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida were surrendered under the terms of the Johnston/Sherman agreement dated April 26, 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina. Negotiations began at the Durham farmhouse near Durham Station days earlier, but the final agreement was signed in Greensboro.

Unlike the Appomattox surrender, the Confederates in North Carolina were not surrounded by Federal soldiers. They held their final roll call formations and were sworn to their paroles in their own camps with no more than a couple of Federal officers present to witness the procedings. Final paroles should be dated April 26, 1865 for those in the ranks with their regiments, and a few days later for those on details away from the main army or absent in area hospitals. Augusta, Georgia was a primary supply base for Johnston's army in North Carolina due to the railroad that crossed the Savannah River there.

By the way, while the railroad bridge across the river at Augusta was replaced in the late 1800's or early 1900's, the railroad line is still in operation!
