Term "Cashiered"

I have noticed in that in some Combined Service Records there will be an notation "cashiered" on an indicated date.

On a date after the date indicated as being "cashiered" the officer's name would appear as commander of a unit which participated in a major engagement.

I was under the impression that the dictionary defined "Cashier" as being "to dismiss in disgrace; as a military officer"

Was there a method by which a "cashiered" officer could be reinstated or transferred to another unit while maintaing his same rank...or does it mean that an officer who was "cashiered" by court martial had the finding reversed by a review officer.

Would appreciate very much any info concerning this term.
