The Union Army, Vol V, pages 336-339

DALLAS, GA. - May 24, 1864. 2nd Cav Div, Army of the Cumberland. on this date the division, commanded by Brig-Gen Kenner Garrard, was encamped on Pumpkin Vine Creek, about 3 miles from Dallas. In a reconnaisance toward the town, he was attacked by Bate's Div, Hardee's Corps, but after a sharp skirmish, succeeded in driving the Confederates back to Dallas. No casualties reported.

DALLAS, GA. May 25 to June 5, 1864. Armies of the Cumberland, Tennessee, and Ohio. 05/24 Gen Sherman learned that Gen Johnston is forming a line along South side of Pumpkin Vine Creek, from Dallas to Allatoona - Johnston's line covered the roads leading from Dallas to Acworth, Marietta and Atlanta, the center being near New Hope Church, 4 miles NE of Dallas, occupying wooded summits of a number of ridges, with open valleys in front over which the Union forces would have to advance. This natural position was easy to defend and made formidable with interlocking trenches.
Sherman advanced on the morning of 05/25 - on the right was Gen McPherson's Army of the TN, near Van Wert, 16 miles NW of Dallas, moving against Dallas by the Rome Road. In the center was the Army of the Cumberland under Gen Thomas, advancing along several roads from Burnt Hickory, some 5-6 miles NE of Dallas. It consisted of the 4th, 14th, & 20th Army Corps, commanded by Gen's Howard, Palmer & Hooker. Butterfield's Division of Hooker's Corps, preceded by McCook's cavalry, moved on the road leading to Golgatha; Geary's Div advanced on the direct road to Dallas; and William's on the right. Palmer's & Howard's Corps made a detour to the right to strike the Van Wert Road 3-4 miles from Dallas, forming a junction with McPherson.
Gen Schofield with the Army of the Ohio, remainded near Burnt Hickory during the day.
Geary's div reached Pumpkin Vine Creek at Owen's Mill to find the bridge on fire & the men fired upon from the hill in front. Part of Hooker's cav escort forded the creek, deployed & drove off an outpost of some 25 cavalrymen. The bridge was repaired, the div crossed over & moved toward New Hope Church; 7th Ohio deployed as skirmishers. About 1.5 miles down the road they encountered the enemy in force. Candy's brigade deployed in line of battle, advanced at double quick and pushed the enemy back. Skirmish line strengthened and extended by addition of 28th PA; rest of Div pressed foreward in close support, forcing the Confederates back .5 mile & capturing some prisoners. The force in front was Hood's entire corps and Hardee was not far off. Hooker ordered Geary to take position on a ridge and throw up barricades. Hooker had already ordered the other 2 divs to Geary's support. They arrived at 4pm & massed troops with Williams on the right and Butterfield on left & rear. An attack was ordered by columns of Brigades, Williams leading, Butterfield next, Geary held in reserve. They assaulted Hood's position repeatedly. Confederate reinforcements were pouring in. The fight rahed on, in the midst of a severe thunderstorm, until dark. Dead and woundeed were gathered and Hooker's forces retired to the ridge in their rear.
Sherman heard the firing at Owen's Mill and ordered Howard to bring up his corps in support of Hooker. Newton's div arrived at 6pm, took position to left of Butterfield. By morning the whole corps, except for Baird's div left guarding the train at Burnt Hickory, were on the field, extending the line to the left. At 5pm, Schofield ordered to the front, leaving Hovey's div to guard the trains. While on recon, Schofields horse fell into a ditch; ZSchofield severely injured & Brig-Gen J.D.Cox took command. Div reached the field att daybreak and took position to extreme left covering the Dallas & Altoona Road.
McPherson pushed foreward on Dallas & on 05/26 was confronting Hardee. Logan's 15th corps fromed the right extending across Atlanta Road; Dodge's 16th Corps on Logan's left; Davis' Div of Palmer's Corps on Dodge's left. Logan's right was picketed by Garrard's div of Cav. Sharp skirmishing along the line all day. McCook's Cav, on the left, skirmished with Wheeler's; McCook captured about 50 prisoners which led Sherman to believe that Wheeler was the only force holding the region east of Johnston's right. Sherman decided to turn the enemies right. Army of the Ohio held the road to Allatoona; Thomas was ordered to withdraw Wood's div of Howard's Corps & unite it with Johnson's Div of Palmer's Corps & make the flank movement, with Howard in charge. Move was made & found Confederates in position for cross-fire, infantry & artillery. At 11am on 05/27 Wood moved to the left about 1 mile & wheeled to the right; McLean's Brigade, Army of the Ohio deployed on Wood's right. McLean deployed as skirmishers & met heavy resistance; withdrew. Howard moved to left about 1 mile. At 5pm another attempt was made rto turn the flank. Command moved foreward and assaulted the main line. Enemy pushed foreward reserves and pushed Howard back, under enfilade fire. Troops pulled back to a ridge and reformed. This was known as Pickett's Mill. Union loss about 1400. Flank movement failed.
05/28, afternoon; McPherson ordered to close on Thomas' left at New Hope Church. Johnston suspected Sherman was moving to left and sent up Bate's Div for frontal assault. McPherson made bloody repulse. Sherman succeeded in moving whole line left about 5 miles. Stoneman's cav moved into Allatoona; Garrard's Cav moved around to rear of Allatoona.
06/04 - withdrew to RR near Acworth, leaving Johnston at New Hope Church. Johnston moved to rr line between Marietta & Kennesaw Mountain.

Hope this helps some.
