Re: 23rd georgia infantry
In Response To: 23rd georgia infantry ()

I am looking for some information on soldiers in my wife's family. William Hicks is listed in Union County on both the 1850 and 1860 census, he is 32 years old in 1850. His wife is Elizabeth Allison. There are four sons that were most certainly involved in the war. James H., William C., Jesse E. and Martin (L.M.). William, the father, was in the Union County Milita and is listed in District 834 of Joe Browns census. A marker on Jesse's grave indicates he was in Co.K, 23rd Georgia Infantry. As of yet I have found no evidence of a Company K, also an L.M. Hicks is buried in Habersham County whom I am certain is a son of William. Census records indicate he is Louis Martin, with the last name sometimes spelled Hix. The marker at his grave says he was in Co. C, llth Regt. Ga. Cavalry. I am having trouble varifying this to my satisfaction. If anyone can help with these soldiers or this line I would appreciate a response.

John,
Found this in Lillian Henderson's "Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia, 1861-1865":
MUSTER ROLL OF

COMPANY K, 23d REGIMENT

GEORGIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY

ARMY OF TENNESSEE

C. S. A.

COFFEE COUNTY, GEORGIA
Hix, Jesse E.- private August 31, 1861 . Wounded at Ocean Pond, Fla. February 20, 1864 . In hospital, wounded, April 30, 1864 . No later record.

...note spelling difference (Hix, Hicks). It appears that there certainly was a K Company of the 23rd Georgia Volunteer Infantry. It was formed in Coffee County, Georgia on 31 August, 1861 (no town listed), and surrendered with Johnson's Army of the Tenn. on 26 April, 1865.
There is also a James H. Hix listed in the same K Company of the 23rd Ga. His Henderson's record is:

Hix, James H.- private August 31, 1861 . Appointed 1st Corporal in 1863 . Died of disease in Union County, Ga. October 31,1864 .
(May be the brother you are seeking).
I am not sure, as Henderson's contains no geneology, but seems quite a coincidence that both men have the same last name, and joined the CSA Army the same day. Was a common practice at the time.I assume that the fact that he died from disease in Union County, that he was probably sent home to die/recover from whatever disease he had (unfortunatly, not mentioned). I would assume that since he died in Union County, that he would be buried in Union County.
I also searched for William Hix (Hicks), and found these possibilities:
MUSTER ROLL OF COMPANY D, 24th REGIMENT

GEORGIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY

ARMY NORTHERN VIRGINIA

C. S. A.

TOWNS COUNTY, GEORGIA.

HIAWASSEE VOLS.
Hix, William- private August 24,1861 . Died in Richmond, Va. hospital May 18,1862 . Buried there in Hollywood Cemetery.
and:
MUSTER ROLL OF COMPANY *C, 34th REGIMENT

GEORGIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY

ARMY OF TENNESSEE

C. S. A.

COWETA AND TROUP COUNTIES, GEORGIA
*This company was also known as Co. E.
Hicks, William (or Hix)-Enlisted as a private in Co. K, 4th Regt Ga. State Troops October 25,1861 . Mustered out April 1862 . Enlisted as a private m Co. C, 34th Regiment Ga. Inf. May 13,1862 . No later record.

....found this possibility on LM Hicks:
MUSTER ROLL OF COMPANY K, 41st REGIMENT

GEORGIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY

ARMY OF TENNESSEE

C. S. A.

CAMPBELL COUNTY, GEORGIA

CAMPBELL SALT SPRINGS GUARDS
Hicks, L. M.- private . Died at Danville, Ky.

Looks as if you may have a couple of answers here. I hope it helps.
