Although the Naval Battalion was not directly in Confederate States Navy service, they were actually formed from workers at the Naval foundry, who were involved in building vessels for the Confederate Navy.
There were similar units in other states.
Some of these service personnel, such as Coppedge (that his how his surname is spelt in the pension file), collected a Confederate pension from the State government, after the war, so more data may be included in their pension files.
