The last battle east of the Mississippi River took place at Columbus GA on April 16, 1865. There were a few incidents afterwards, but no real fighting.

Paroles at Hartwell were issued by the Federal officer who established a military post there. Soldiers coming home from the Carolinas or elsewhere walked into town to receive their paroles. Near the end of the war, many of these men were already at home, waiting for hostilities to cease.
