Prudens Battery was organized around May 26, 1864. Originaly Pruden's Battery was assigned to Col. C. W. Styles battalion of artillery and saw duty at the Chattahoochee river. Later in the trenches of Atlanta it was attached to the Division of General Samuel G. French.

After Stoneman's raid threatened Milledgeville the state capitol at that time, it was decided to form a special unit to protect the capitol. Around August, 1864 this unit was attached to "The Capitol Guards" as the artillary unit. The Cavalry unit was Talbot's Georgia Milita Company. The Infantry unit was the Georgia Military Corps of Cadets. These units was under the command of Brigadier General Francis W. Capers who was under the command of General Henry C. Wayne.

When Sherman left Atlanta headed for the sea, The Capitol Guards were one of the few unit in place to oppose him. The biggest action was at the Oconee Bridge. It was here that Prudens Battery mounted one of their pieces of artillary on a platform car and placed it on the bridge to fire at the enemy.

They opposed Sherman to Savannah and participated in the action there. When Savannah was surrendered the unit went to South Carolina under Maj. Gen G.W. Smith's command. They went to Charleston and then Augusta Ga.

On April 15, 1865 Pruden's Battery was ordered to Columbus, Ga. After Columbus surrendered they went to Albany Georgia. On May 18, 1865 Pruden's battary surrendered in Albany Georgia to Union Brig. Gen. E. M. McCook's command. They surrendered with other confederate trioops from Florida under the command of Maj. Gen. Sam Jones.
