Your post mentions two entirely different units that happen to share the same number. State Guards served within the boundaries of the state of Georgia for limited terms, such as the six-month enlistment that you mentioned for William M. Parks.

The 16th Georgia Partisan Ranger Battalion had a different history. Six companies organized by May 14, 1862, soon going into camp in Cobb County, Ga. Officers and men received equipment and drilled at Camp McDonald (Big Shanty) from May 27 through June 21, 1862. During much of 1862 most reports refer to the command as the 1st Georgia Partisan Ranger Regiment.

In addition to the actions mentioned in East Tennessee and the Shenandoah Valley, members of the battalion accompanied Gen. Early into West Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Major battles afterward included Winchester and Fisher's Hill, Va.
