Re: grave location of one of my ancestor

Wilbur,

While it is true that most casualties were buried in hasty graves immediately following the battles in northern VA the majority of them were later transferred after the war to Petersburg VA and buried at the Blanford Church Cemetery. There are 30,000 Confederates buried there in the largest Confederate Cemetery that I know of. Some care was taken to identify the state of origin based upon uniform buttons etc. While individuals obviously could not be id'd they are buried by state in mass plots. In the colonial era section of the city, overlooking a main section of the Petersburg battlefield and laid out almost as if in mass regimental formation by state, Blanford is one of the most amazing places I've ever been.
