I have read books that give much detail about battle field positions of various regiments during battles, details of who was in charge, which Confederate units opposed which Federal units, detail of casualties, theories of “what ifs” etc, etc.
There is much well-deserved attention and detail shown for those with combat assignments. It is also apparent what the role was for those with medical training.

What I was wondering about is those who had support assignments like teamsters, wagon and artillery related maintenance, caring for horses and mules, cooks and butchers, etc,. Is it a documented fact that there were those who stayed in the rear area tending routine assignments as needed, or was every able bodied man out front doing battle?
