Thats about accurate. Pioneers were kind of like combat engineers. Usually they would precede a formation and remove any obstacles such as fences to expedite the required movements of thier parent formations, cut down trees, build or widen roads....but they werent really 'Engineers'.....more like guys who worked with the axe and the spade.
