Medical Directors of the Army of Tennessee

Records in Other Custody ---

In 1915 Surgeon Stout's collection of medical records of the Army of Tennessee were sold to several repositories and individuals. The extensive Stout collection in the Texas Archives in the University of Texas Library relates to hospitals in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi.

The records relating to Stout's activities as Medical Director of Hospitals are described below. There are correspondence and order books, Dec. 16, 1863, July 24, 1863-Mar. 22, 1865, and Jan. 1, 1864-July 19, 1864 (3 vols.) Part of the first volume relates to his services as post surgeon at Chattanooga before he became medical director, and other records for 1862-63 that are described below also relate to that assignment. An order book, Apr. 12-May1, 1865, contains copies of orders issued by Stout at Colombus and Atlanta. Correspondence and other papers, Jan. 9, 1862-Dec. 18, 1864 (2 in.), include letters received and sent, orders, vouchers, statements of provisions issued, and summaries of accounts current of hospital funds. Morning reports of the Medical Director, Apr. 1, 1863-July 19, 1864, contains statistical data on men in hospitals in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. Another small file of S. H. Stout papers, 1861-65, includes letters , telegrams, orders, circulars, and contracts with private physicians. Some of the communications in this file are addressed to Surg. A. J. Foard.

Original manuscripts are found in several other repositories, which like above, appear to be mainly of an administrative nature.

We do see however, that the S. H. Stout papers in the W. P. Palmer Collection in the Western Reserve Historical Society contains a register of deaths, relating mostly to Georgia hospitals 1863-64.

And then, there is no description of Stout papers, 1861-65 on microfilm, at Emory University Library which were obtained from W. E. Thomas of Medford, Oreg., who had purchased the original papers from Mrs. Katherine Stout Moore.

I can scan and forward these two pages, 176-177, found in Henry Putney Beers, The Confederacy, A Guide to the Archives of the Government of the Confederate States of America, National Archives and Records Administration Washington, D. C. 1986.
