If this man was captured rather than killed, we would expect to find a corresponding prisoner of war record. Also, if captured during 1862, we would expect also him to have been exchanged and returned to Confederate lines within a few months, if not weeks.

Records found in the two files mentioned have one record each reporting a battlefield death at or near Manassas VA, Aug. 29, 1862. One is dated Apr. 22, 1864. It appears that Confederate authorities were convinced of his death. If they were mistaken, it seems that this man never returned to his command.
