These notes come from the two service files of the Spikes soldiers. Anyone interested in the military service of an ancestor should start by reading records found in his military service file. It certainly would save a lot of time and trouble.

It usually took the Confederate government a long time to process records of soldiers. Apr. 22, 1864, is the last date noted on a death record for the soldier mentioned earlier, but records are found in both Spikes service files. Sometimes clerks put records in the wrong files.
