D-285 refers to a particular letter in a series, perhaps letters received by the Confederate Adjutant General's Office. I've seen some of that microfilm and it's quite interesting. Note also that inspection reports are given a combination letter-number designation. Dr. Bob Davis at Wallace State College has written about this 19th-century letter index system.
