Georgia Burials, Confederate Cemetery, Augusta

In Magnolia Cemetery, Augusta, is a Confederate Section, with 236 interments, all but five of whom are identified by name. The graves were originally marked with small amrble markers, which give the name and (usually) the state form which the man served. Those markers do not give either units or dates of death. In a few instances the original markers have been replaced with VA issued headstones, and on those more information is usually given. From the few dates availab le, it appears that the section was used only during the war for men who died in Augusta hosptials, or perhaps in the immediate aftermath of the war. It almost certianly was not used as a burial ground for veterans postwar. I suspect strongly that those buried in the section were not from Augusta; those men would be buried in their family plots scattered through the cemetery.
