Re: McBrayer, 9th Batt, Georgia Cavalry

Mike, the Stonewall Inn was an interesting place. It was built of rough dark red stone, and was very rustic. There were about a dozen stone cabins built around it, to accommodate travelers. No TVs back then, of course, but each had a radio, and the beds vibrated, for a quarter! To relieve the stress of travel of course! I can still see the bright pine walls of the dining room, with several glass cases built into them. Each was about four feet wide, and maybe six feet tall. Most of them were about a foot deep in loose Minie balls, picked up around Kennesaw Mountain, about ten miles northwest. There were rifles in varying condition, from good to rusted relics, also picked up on the battlefield. There was fighting all around during the Atlanta Campaign. Swords and bayonets were included, with buckles, parts of knapsacks, canteens, etc. When the place closed and was torn down I was on active duty, so am not sure what happened to all that historical material, but hope that most of it was donated to the visitor center at Kennesaw Mountain National Military Park.
