Mr. Gay states that this unit was never accepted in U.S. service, and as an ad hoc unit, never given any training or equipment. The unofficial organization was disbanded on Dec. 15, 1864. He also says officers and men ran away whenever Confederate troops approached. Rolls were created from memory.
