J. L. McNair, Co. C, 31st Georgia

In Greg White's book, A History of the 31st Georgia Infantry, p. 279, Private James L. McNair is listed as having been wounded in the left shoulder at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863, then captured at Falling Waters on 14 July. He is listed as possibly having been wounded at Monocacy, Maryland on 9 July 1864, dying of his wounds at General Hospital, Frederick, MD on 25 July 1864, and being buried there at Mount Olivet Cemetery. However, The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion tells a different story. It lists a Private J. L. M___ (rest of surname not provided) of Company C, 31st Georgia as having been wounded at Gettysburg on 1 July. This soldier is most likely McNair. The entry says he was sent three days later to Hospital #1 in Frederick, Maryland. At the hospital, Acting Assistant Surgeon W. S. Adams reported his being wounded by a minie ball below the clavicle and that he died at 10 a.m. on 5 July [1863]. An autopsy determined that the ball had divided the head of the humerus into two parts. This would explain how McNair wound up in Mount Olivet Cemetery, but the above two cited sources differ considerably on the date of his death.
