Missing Soldier

I have 3 g-Uncles who joined 9 July 1861 at Antioch, Troup Co., GA into Co. 21 Regt GA Infantry - John T. Boykin, Captain. David A., James and John Porter. They were to go to Richmond, VA to be mustered in. David A. and James Porter were mustered in 28 July 1861. No record of John Porter arriving. Believe he died in route to Richmond from Antioch in those 19 days. Have sent for his Military records and have been sent wrong man twice. Is there anyway I can track down where he might be buried? I would think once he enlisted there would have been Roll Call in route, at least when they arrived in Richmond. Also would think his commanding officer would have noticed he was gone or dead and sent a letter to his parents. Since his 2 older brothers were with him, surely they would have noticed he was not there. Did commanding officers keep some kind of a list of the letters they had to send to parents? Would love to find out where John Porter is buried.
