The W & A Railroad was guarded by the Georgia State Line raised specifically for that purpose by Joe Brown. This came about after the Andrews Raid. There is a book that covers their history - Joe Brown's Army: The Georgia State Line, 1862-1865 - by William Harris Bragg. Hopefully the information you are seeking is in there.
