Re: Siege of Vicksburg: 42nd Georgia Company B

42nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry

42nd Infantry Regiment was assembled at Camp McDonald, Georgia, in March, 1862, with men from Gwinnett, De Kalb, Newton, Walton, Fulton, and Calhoun counties. The regiment moved to Tennessee, then Mississippi where it was attached to General Barton's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It fought at Chickasaw Bayou and Champion's Hill, and on July 4, 1863, was captured at Vicksburg. Exchanged and brigaded under General Stovall, the 42nd continued the fight in various battles from Missionary Ridge to Bentonville. In December, 1863, it contained 444 men and 394 arms, and in November, 1864, there were 345 present for duty. The regiment surrendered with the Army of Tennessee with 5 officers and 126 men. Its field officers were Colonel Robert J. Henderson, Lieutenant Colonels W.H. Hulsey and Robert F. Maddox, and Major Lovick P. Thomas.

S. N. Martin, Private, Company B, 42nd Regiment Georgia Infantry, enlisted March 4, 1862 at Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, Georgia for 3 years or the war, paid $50 bounty, last shown present on the May 19, 1862 muster which was held at Cumberland Gap. Tenn, no other records

Record of Events, Company B, for the period March 4 to April 30, 1862, dated May 19, 1862 at Cumberland Gap, Tenn.

Left Yellow River Gwinnett Co., Ga. March 10 and arrived at Camp McDonald, Ga. March 10, 1862. Left Camp McDonald April 16, arrived at Knoxville, Tenn. April 17, 1862. Marched from Knoxville April 23, 1862 at noon and arrived at Cumberland Gap April 28, 1862

The next surviving company b-monthly report is for the period March & April, 1863 while at Vicksburg

Since there are no later records for Martin and he is not recorded on this later muster roll, I would suspect that he died in January, 1863 as recorded on burial records. The missing muster roll for the period January & February, 1863 most likely recorded his death.

Record of Events for the period April 30 to October 31, 1863, dated December 11, 1863, stationed near Dalton, Ga.

Arrived at Vicksburg December 23, 1862, engaged in fight at Chickasaw Bayo [sic] December 28, 29.
