It's not clear when Gartrell and his company actually joined Forrest's cavalry. A receipt in Capt Gartrell's service file shows forage issued at Tuscaloosa AL, May 21, 1864, 48 horses (and men) en route to Forrest's command. Evidently the company was assigned as escort to General Abram Buford, who led a Kentucky brigade that had been recently mounted.
