There's much to be learned about the "Cold Mountain" units that pursued deserters and conscripts during the war. No flags, no speeches and no uniforms, and bring your own arms and ammunition if you have any. Come as you are.

This was frustrating and difficult work as it often involved bringing force to bear against neighbors, friends and even family. When people use the term "Brothers War", it was more often like this than soldiers in different uniforms. Of course the novel "Cold Mountain" was based on an actual 'home guard' unit and a North Carolina soldier named Inman.
