Re: 16th battalion GA cavalry State Guards
In Response To: 16th battalion georgia cavalry ()

Don --

Alfred Jackson appears on roll as 1st Sergeant, Co "G", 16th Battn Georgia Cavalry (State Guards). This is NOT the same as Co "G", 16th Battn Georgia Cavalry, a unit in Confederate service. State Guards served for six months, local duty only. Alfred Jackson appears on the only muster roll as enlisting at Elijay GA, July 7, 1863, Capt E M Spriggs. Capt Spriggs and his company went into state service on Aug 1, 1863, and mustered out on Feb 1, 1864.

According to Confederate military law, school teachers who met certain qualifications were exempt from service. The 1860 census for Gilmer County GA lists Alfred Jackson as a teacher. That may explain why he enrolled in this company instead of a command sent to fight in Tennessee, Mississippi or Virginia.

Civilian service files show that he was paid as an subenrolling officer (SEO) for Gilmer County from Feb 11 - May 1, 1863, receipt signed at Camp Randolph, Decatur GA, Aug 3, 1863. His name does not appear on the 1864 census for reorganizing the Georgia State Militia.

This is his findagrave memorial -
