Hello Don, The 29th Georgia Cavalry Battalion was formed with a promise not to send it's members beyond 100 miles of their homes. Each company had their own agenda so to speak as they were from various places in Georgia in 1863 if my memory is correct. Because of the Confederate draft and the promise to stay within 100 miles of their homes the battalion rather quickly filled her ranks. I can speak of company C as many of their members were in northern Florida in March of 1864 following the battle of Ocean Pond in February. One of companies C's members was ambushed by Confederate deserters in March of 1864 and later taken prisoner and died. He was from Brooks County and was within a 100 miles of his home. The Colonel of the battalion was Hood and the Hood hospital in Cuthbert, Georgia was named after him.

The promise to keep the 29th Georgia Cavalry Battalion in Georgia within a 100 miles of their homes was broken and the battalion found itself in South Carolina as an example toward the later years of the war.
