Re: Powder Springs
In Response To: Powder Springs ()

The best I can determine is heavy skirmishing and exchanges of artillery on the day preceding the assault on Kennesaw Mountain July 27th. Schofield's 23rd Corps was attacking Hoods Corps and had been engaged along the Powder Springs Road on the right of Shermans Line. Although not directly involved in the assault the enemy's artillery and skirmishers were active. Report from the 41st Miss. Sharp's Brigade indicated their men were shelled while building breastworks near Mt. Zion Church about that same time. So there may not have been a named action, but there was action. even if the date was July 1st or in that week, Hoods Corps was falling back and aggressively acting against the federal forces as it reached the Smyrna Line and backed up to the River line near Nickajack Creek July 1-3. You may find details of daily action in the OR. Check Haskell, Ausmus, McLean, Cooper, and others in the division and Brigade.
