Looking at the different statements, and looking at Amazon's "look inside" feature for Hess' "Kennesaw Mountain." I think that the vets making the statements have their dates off. Hess talks about the flanking march and quotes Hascall (the brigade commander for my ancestor) talking about the excessive heat on July 1 and many soldiers falling from sunstroke.

I have no idea where the dates for July 26 come from, but Aug. 6 mentioned on the statement from the Records and Pension Office is the date for the battle on Utoy Creek.

I think the old vets are just confusing dates, and that he suffered the heat stroke July 1 and just over a month later was wounded at Utoy Creek.
