Recruiting

Before the conscript was enacted how were men recruited? Was there a recruiter in each town? Or did they travel from town to town in a certain county? Did recruiters have specific days to be in a certain town on a certain day or time period? In doing some research on Confederate graves from one county, I noticed that the enlistment date of March 10, 1862 had by far the most enlistments of any other date. Just wondering if this was a day that the recruiter was there, or if it had to do with the Conscription Act. I have read accounts of men being detached, from service in the field, to go home to recruit new men, but all these seemed to be a little later in the war.
