This is an excellent battlefield to visit.
When I went I was not aware of the private land in the fort and I walked all through the inside. It is extremely cool to see the Barnard pictures of the fort and from the inside and see what it is like now.
I would recommend William Scaife's "Campaign for Atlanta" and also "Needles Effusion of Blood". These two books have detailed maps of the battle laid over a modern map so you can see where each unit was. I believe one of the signs as you begin through the pass includes that map.

I would also recommend Picketts Mill battlefield, it is largely undisturbed also.
