Here's an excerpt of a letter composed April 1863 near the Rappahannock by Daniel Snell, Co. H, 31st Georgia, Lawton's Brigade, as featured in my 1997 book - A History of the 31st Georgia Volunteer Infantry:

"Let me tell you what the Yankees had to say while we were on picket duty. One asked what we thought of our new general. We said, 'what general?' They said, 'General Starvation.' Some of the boys were as friendly as could be, though. We got some papers from them. One had Mr. Butler's reconstruction speech in it."
