Re: Gott, Lt. John-Cherokee Mounted Rifles

In Grant Foreman's transcription of rolls in the National Archives, John Gott is shown as a Lieut. in Company "G" 1st Cherokee Rifles, enlisting July 12, 1861, in the Cherokee Nation; further notes read "on roll Dec. 4-61; Age, 52; 5ft.10in.; dk comp; farmer, born in Tennessee.

The next entry is for William Gott, private, Co. G.; Age 21; 5ft.8in; fair comp; blue eyes; light hair; farmer; born in Cher.Nat.

Also, in the 2nd Cherokee, there is a George Gott in Co. F.

Note that in the Cherokee units (if not also in other Confederate units), the senior captain company commander was given Company "A"; so even though companies had the same commanders and men, their unit designations might change from time to time.
