Captain Hugh Tinnin was company commander of the reorganized (second) Company "A" of the 1st Regiment of Cherokee Mounted Volunteers; Colonel Stand Watie was the Regimental Commander.

The following regimental history is an excerpt from Dr. Grant Foreman's notes in the Archives & Manuscripts Division of the Oklahoma Historical Society:

[Second] 1st Regiment Cherokee Mounted Volunteers (2/reorganized)

Called into service by BG Ben McCulloch (PCA) for 1 year on 12 Jul 61 as 2nd Regiment Cherokee Mounted Volunteers, Col. Stand Watie, commanding. Reorganized 12 Jul 62 for 2 years service. After collapse of original 1st Regiment, this unit was re-designated 1st Regiment Cherokee Mounted Volunteers
