Re: Raids around Mena, AR

Thanks, Ken, for your quick response. I am glad you verified some information for me. I had understood that Polk County is where my ancestors married, but I have not been able to verify that information. How were you able to determine the township? Would you have any suggestions where I might begin to search? My surnames are COCKRELL, ABBOTT, ROUSWELL. If you have any suggested sites, I would certainly enjoy their perusal.

About the Indian Raid, I have oral family history verified by living relatives that my Cherokee ancestor who married the Abbott relation (her maiden name is unknown) was killed on the homeplace during 1862/63. Abbott joined the war in 1862 and never returned.

There were battles just north and just south of Mena, but not in Mena proper. There is a reported battle just north of Mena in 1863. If I understand correctly, it was an invasion of Union Indians into the Confederate loyal Indian settlements. There is very little information that includes specifics.

I was hoping this link might provide me with some possibilites for further searches. Let me know if you stumble onto anything you think might be of value.
