Re: Raids around Mena, AR

My grandmother was Dora Elizabeth Woods born in Arkansas 1882-1885, she was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Woods. The story that was told was that there was a skirmish between the Indians and ?, and Dora's mother and father had to leave their home to get away from it all. After they had escaped, and while still on the road, Dora was born and her mother died. Dora was taken to relatives.
She married William Ervin West of Checotah on August 8, 1897. In the marriage Certificate she claims she is 16, being born in 1881, but Census records and later marriages put her date of birth as 1884/1885. The Marriage Certificate #794 in Marriage Book F, page 52 is given as:
United States of America
Indian Territory, Northern District.
The Minister of the Gospel was Thomas Shanks
Clerk of the United States Court was Jas. A. Winston

Everyone said Dora was Cherokee and William was part-Creek Indian. William Ervin West died Sept. 15, 1909 and is buried in Lerblance Cemetery - some say you had to be "Indian" to be buried there.
I haven't been able to verify the Indian nationality, or Lerblance Cemetery's entrance requirements.
Glad to hear someone else show the Woods name was an Indian name
Thank you,
Barbara Lee West
