Hi, Glenn -- To answer both of your questions at once:

The Arkansas map can be had from the Department of Arkansas Heritage. I'm sure they'd really appreciate a self-addressed stamped envelope along with your request. Their address is 1500 Tower Building, 323 Center Street, Little Rock AR 72201.

The regional map covers portions of southwest Missouri, northwest Arkansas, northeast Oklahoma, and souteast Kansas. Criteria for inclusion included having "some" interpretive signage or brochure or staff available for the traveling public. (E.g. The historical society at Baxter Springs has prepared an area driving map leading to the Baxter Springs battlefield and area. Therefore, we're sending folks to the museum in town for assistance, rather than trying to encompass all that needs to be shown there. Those driving US-62 between Fort Gibson and Park Hill will see a standard highway sign noting "Bayou Menard", but since there is no historical marker or other interpretive signage nearby, we will not include that location on the map.)

MISSOURI: Island Mound Battlefield (near Butler) and Bates County Historical Museum (Butler); Bushwhacker Museum (Nevada); Battle of Carthage State Historic Site; Battle of Springfield; Springfield National Cemetery; General Sweeney's Museum (Republic); Wilson's Creek National Battlefield; Newtonia Battlefield; Neosho (with a note about Cassville); ARKANSAS: Pea Ridge National Military Park; Fayetteville National Cemetery; Fayetteville Confederate Cemetery; Headquarters House (Fayetteville); Prairie Grove Battlefield; Cane Hill Battlefield; Cane Hill Cemetery; Fort Smith National Historic Site [NHL]; Fort Smith National Cemetery; Massard Prairie Battlefield; Confederate Section of Fairview Cemetery (Van Buren); OKLAHOMA: Honey Springs Battlefield; Fort Gibson Historic Site [NHL]; Fort Gibson National Cemetery; George M. Murrell House [NHL] (Park Hill); Cabin Creek Battlefield; KANSAS: Baxter Springs Historical Museum; "National Soldiers' Plot" of Baxter Springs Cemetery; Fort Scott National Historic Site [NHL]; Fort Scott National Cemetery; Mine Creek Battlefield; Linn County Historical Society Museum (Pleasanton); Trading Post Museum (Trading Post).

Each stop's location, hours of operation, phone number, and special driving instructions (if needed) will be included on the "map" side. On the reverse will be a BRIEF note as to the site's importance (e.g. "Honey Springs -- site of the largest engagement in the Indian Territory"). As far as possible each site will have a photograph or other (perhaps historic) illustration.

Others on the committee include either the superintendent or his representative from Wilson's Creek, Pea Ridge, Fort Smith, and Fort Scott, plus Mark Christ of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. Ed Bearss has agreed to write the paragraps on the war in the Trans-Mississippi and a paragraph that links each of these sites together.

Comments are welcome from anyone and can be sent to <ralphjones@ok-history.mus.ok.us>. [By the way, "NHL" stands for National Historic Landmark, which is the highest designation possible on the National Register of Historic Places.]
