Donald,

There was a Union encampment at Baxter Springs which was one of the permanent "stations" built along the road to Fort Scott. You should assume your ancestor's unit did stop there, before proceeding to Fort Scott. Besides the presence of food and ammunition as well as a rest stop for his men, the unit's commanding officer would also check to see if he had any communications and orders waiting for him.
