Re: 1st Indian Expedition -- UNION.

In reading various accounts of the return of the Expedition, Blunt sent a rider to tell the Commander to halt when and where he received the order. BUT when Blunt got to Fort Scott on the 15th, the Kansas 10th Inf. was already there, minus Richard P. Reed(Read) who had died on the 10th. I just got word that the records have been received by a new researcher friend and they say he died at -- it is hard to read -- Carter Springs? -- I checked and the Kansas State Hist. Soc. put out a list of defunct towns, Trading Posts, etc. and on the list is a Carter's Spring in Cherokee Co., Kansas where it says that Richard P, Reed(Read) died. I have not seen the copy yet. I have queried the Baxter Springs Museum for the location of Carter's Spring. Another source tells me that Carter's Spring is South in I.T. The record received show him as a Sgt. while the Adjutant Generals Report shows him as a Cpl. Of course I have found other errors in the A.J's. Report over time. In 1862 there was not much at Baxter Springs or Humboldt. I understand that the Fort at Fort Scott has some original pay records, so will have to go there and see what i can find. Odd that Richard came from New York and appears to have lived with his brother (my gr.grandfather) in Linn County, Kansas yet no family mnetion of a brother being killed although in the family is a letter referencing another brother that was later killed at Cold Harbor. thanks for the input. don read
