Dear Pam,

These three (3) books are all “reference” works and though you are in “God’s Country” (my family is from Muskogee and my brother and his family live in Tulsa), you are not in a strong area for Civil War study. In looking quickly at their catalog, I noticed the University of Tulsa has Dunbar Rowland’s 3-vol “History of Mississippi”. They do not have Howell’s or Crute’s books. Apparently, your Tulsa Public Library also does not have any of these books as I also looked quickly at their catalog online.

There are others on this board who are far more familiar with the library resources there in Oklahoma. I’m in Houston, TX. At the very worst I’m sure the Tulsa Library could get these books for you by “Interlibrary Loan”. I will contact some people who can get the Microfilm Record/Roll Number for the James Davis in the 1st Choctaw Battalion (MS) and ask them to visit the board. You should get an answer in the next day or two.

In the meantime, the Mississippi Civil War historians all congregate at a Message Board similar to this one at:

Mississippi Civil War WWWBoard
http://misscivilwar.org/wwwboard/general/

Go to this site and post your query, just as you did here. Just for clarity the three (3) titles and authors you’re interested in are:

"Military History of Mississippi, 1803-1898” by Dunbar Rowland
“For Dixie Land, I’ll Take My Stand” by H. Grady Howell
“Units of the Confederate States Army” by Joseph H. Crute, Jr.

I’m sure they can help you with Dunbar Rowland, H. Grady Howell and other information.

Last of all, I don’t want to get you too excited over the James Davis in the 1st Choctaw Battalion. Many mixed-bloods from Mississippi also fought in “white” units and below are the other candidates from the Broadfoot Roster of Confederate Soldiers which is compiled from the NARA microfilms. This James Davis may be your man, but he could be one of the others listed below.

Thanks for contributing to the message board. Please come back and tell us what you find.
