Re: Confederates Buried at Atoka

The muster roll of the 19th (Dawson's) Arkansas Infantry, dated at Fort McCulloch, C.N., June 4, 1862, doesn't mention the cause of death. However, letters and reports from Dawson's and other Arkansas regiments from this period report that an epidemic of measles raged for over a month, beginning in April 1862. The 18th (Carroll's) Arkansas Infantry was reduced from about 1100 men to less than 400. The other regiments weren't hit quite as hard as this, but all of them reported a large number of deaths to measles.
