The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Re: CWPT Coming to Springfield, MO

Thanks for the note Steve. However, I'm not officially one of the historians for the conference. Its title "Civil War in the Ozarks" doesn't necessarily exclude the Indian Territory, but the powers that be at CWPT are considering listing us as an "add on" for those who might want to stay over after the conference and visit "other" battlefields in the region.

We have proposed a tour from Springfield to Cabin Creek to Honey Springs to Fort Gibson and return with luncheon provided here by the Friends of Honey Springs Battlefield. The tour would take approx. 10 hours -- but there have been MANY 10 - 11 - 12 hour tours at CWPT over the past few years. (CWPT Memphis in 2006 had a tour to Brice's Cross Roads and Tupelo which took over 10 hours, so our proposal is not out of line at all.)

Our feeling is that many of those who will attend the Springfield conference will have already seen Wilson's Creek and Pea Ridge and may want an alternative. No one would be forced to sign up for the Indian Territory tour, but I still think it should be OFFERED to them.

If any of you are members of the Civil War Preservation Trust, please let them know IF you believe they should offer a tour of the Indian Territory (including Honey Springs) to those attending.

Thanks

Ralph Jones, Superintendent
Honey Springs Battlefield
