Ken,
Your post made me think of another question I have about the Pin Indians.

Do you know when the men started defecting from Drew's Regiment? I have read some statements by men who were supposed to be with the regiment but say they were never part of the Confederacy. They say they were part of Drew's group who were bodyguards for John Ross. They said when they found out they were going to be put in Confederate Service, they went home and were never part of the regiment.

I don't know much about the formation of Drew's Regiment but wonder if, at first, they were just going to be bodyguards for John Ross. Then the role of the regiment changed and that is why many defected.

Do you have any insight on this?
